  • Sometimes it's just a "C" coin for the grade. Decent, not great. Nothing wrong with having coins that aren't CAC, nobody is infallible. I do keep some stuff that isn't beaned, but they make up a vast minority of my collection. I guess it depends on how common it is to find stuff within your niche that are CAC, at the end of the day. If you can afford to be picky, awesome!

  • Hello, my name is Greg. I'm a retiree now living in Arkansas after working over 34 years with Shell Oil and Shell International E&P. I started collecting in the mid-1960's as many kids did, filling holes in my Whitman Lincoln cent albums from circulation. My main focus now is higher-grade PCGS/NGC certified U.S. type coins, and have expanded that over the years to start including examples for each type from each producing mint as well as significant varieties, proof types and keys/semi-keys. Keeps the "hunt" evergreen! Secondary interests are certified U.S. and Confederate currency type sets and silver and gold classic commemoratives. I look forward to discussions with the members of this new forum!

  • Hello from Nevada. I bought into PCGS and NGC slabbed coins from the beginning and haven't looked back. I do like the green bean. I can't add much to what everyone else has said above. I am seeing some very nice pictures of coins here...

    Howdy Folks.

I thought I'd keep it simple and use the same user name I have had on both the PCGS and NGC boards since their respective formations. I'm still TomB and I'll try to get my green demon avatar loaded up to be visually consistent, as well.

I've been a full-time numismatist for a dozen years, though since the pandemic initially shut down the show circuit I've largely put the numismatic business to bed. My website is still active with educational articles and I've published numerous articles in numismatic publications as well as wrote the introduction and edited the definitive reference on Reeded Edge half dollars in collaboration with Dick Graham. I'm a PhD scientist, so I tend to look at things a bit analytically. I'm looking forward to see what transpires here.

  • Hi all, I am Torey.

I collect most US coins in Old holders. I'm also "Flackthat" on the CU forum.

  • Hello fellow CAC forumites! Happy to be here and engage with some like minded enthusiasts!

  • Here’s an additional thought/comment for my intro above. I posed a question as to why would someone choose not to spend $16 to see if their coin merits a CAC sticker? I mentioned two obvious reasons to spend the $16. Here’s a reason I believe could be why many collectors choose NOT to submit eligible coins above a certain value to CAC: Psychology!! They fear that too many of their coins will not “pass”, and that rejection will be emotionally crushing!

  • Steve,

In my experience, it's usually just a combination of apathy and laziness. Most people can't be bothered with how to sign up for a CAC account and once they see the whole "waitlist" thing and think about filling out an application, they get scared off. I have several serious collector friends who opt to not sign up for those reasons.

Yes, that’s true. But I also suspect my theory is true too, and much more widespread. The problem is, VERY FEW would admit to others that my theory is their true reason, as it’s much easier and socially acceptable for people to say what they’ve told you!

    Steve

  • I believe both of you, @Winesteven and @fadetoblack1004 are correct, and would add at least a third reason. That is, and not to put too fine a point on it, ignorance. Many folks who buy coins believe they already know it all (or virtually all) and that the folks at CAC (or other educated folks) could not possibly help them with education.

This type of attitude is not restricted to numismatics, sadly.

  • Hello, I am James Sibley from Spring, Texas [a northern suburb of Houston]. I retired 3 years ago from a 31-year career building the country's 3rd largest land title data company. With lots of new-found time on my hands I decided to return, after a 53-year hiatus, to coin collecting. I began collecting when I was 10, perusing the change received from my newspaper customers [New Haven (CT) Register]; my collecting was placed on hold by college, military service, raising a family and a business career. Today I collect low-mintage, high-grade U.S. Type coins in NGC and PCGS holders [preferably a proof with a CAC sticker]. My take away these last three years is how much this hobby/industry has changed since I last collected: third-party grading services, registries, large auction firms and, of course, all the capabilities the internet brings. Ciao!

  • Hello all. I'm Bill Luebke and owner of the Old Chelsea Collection on the PCGS registry. I specialize in Seated Dollars, Trade Dollars and 19th century type coins in the grade of XF45 with CAC approval. I'm looking to network with those of similar interests and hopefully fill in some of the empty holes in my sets,

  • Hello. Thank you for the invite. I’m Liz. I’ve been in the coin business since 1983 where I learned about the hobby by being Q. David Bower’s secretary. I love the coin business and feel blessed to be able to buy and sell coins on a daily basis. What fun! I started my own business in January 2019 after working for major retailers for 35 years. I look forward to seeing some great coins and joining in some interesting discussions.

Hi Folks! I'm Andy Lustig, but I go by TheCoinHound because I like coins and dogs, and I don't want anyone to know who I really am.

Coin collector since 5, coin dealer (and still a collector) since 15, and over the hill since 30. My specialty is patterns, but I handle all kinds of US, from slop to the best of the best. And I've been been doing as much with world coins as with US for the past couple of decades, specializing in Spain and Latin America, but trying to handle cool coins from all over the globe. It keeps things interesting and it keeps me young. OK, more the former than the latter, but you get the drift.

  • Hello Everyone,

My name is Vincent Savage and I live in Homosassa , Florida . Just moved here from Tampa , which I called home for the last 35 years when I wasn’t working overseas. Always had a thing for coin collecting . After a long hiatus from the hobby I am now back at it these past few years . Only now I have more time and quite frankly more means by which to enjoy building a wonderful collection . I like Saint Gauden a lot and I have several in MS 67 . I have one coin , it’s a 1923 D ms 66+ that I crossed over from NGC to PCGS and was the first one that Mr. Albanese approved for CAC for me . I love shipwreck coins and have several SS Central America CAC coins but I’m still looking for an 1857 S ms 66 CAC if anyone has one . Also looking for a 1927 PCGS Saint ms 67 CAC .

I like riding my adventure bike , shooting guns and nice cars . Retired businessman and gun fighter with a disability ( spine injury ) that I forget I sometimes have …. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Looking forward to participating here on the CAC forum .

  • Hello all, like some others here I am using the same username as I use on the NGC and PCGS forums; I guess that may be good or bad depending right lol. Well for anyone not used to seeing my posts I'm a lifelong Lincoln cent collector, I have a complete date and mm set from 1909 thru 1958 with a few of the major varieties. I am currently working on adding the remaining Memorial and Shield cents, but at a very leisurely pace as nice Memorial cents are few and far between. In-between I am working on a few type sets and buying old holders when I can find one that is not too pricey, which is tough to find these days.

Like many of you here I like what CAC has to offer the coin collecting community and am looking forward to the discussions on this forum.

  • Hi all. You may recognize my screen name from the pcgs forum. I am a New England collector, working on a US gold type set. Luckily I have a lot of runway left in my collecting career - many coins still to go! Happy to participate here.

  • Doug Winter here. Rare gold coin specialist and full time dealer for 40+ years. Resident of Portland OR and owner of DWN/Douglas Winter Numismatics. I wont post often but I'd like to think that when I do, my comment(s) will be well-reasoned and thoughtful. Am happy to answer any gold-coin or market-related questions here or via email at dwn@ont.com.

  • Hello everyone! Derin here and I am a coin enthusiast/amateur collector and I am here to learn from all of you. Have a good one and thanks for letting me join your forum!

  • Hi Everyone. I am Mark from Central Pennsylvania. My collecting passion is Liberty $2.50's. In the 2010-2012 period I sent all my PCGS graded coins to CAC after becoming a CAC member. I learned much by seeing about half of my set not gaining CAC approval. I retained the ones that passed and sold the rest. It has taken years to replace the coins I sold with PCGS/CAC examples...the replacement process is still not complete . Today I plod along adding only PCGS/CAC to my 1840-1907 date/mint mark set when I can.
