The one I miss the most is the finest known 1871, Rattler graded 64. Pissed me off since dealers who saw it went nuts. Finally, I sold (traded) for bullion gold. Good trade but not good enough. NGC graded it 66. It was crossed to PC 66 and CAC'ed. Pretty much killed my enthusiasm and I sold off my type set also. Now newps tend to non US coins.
I have no idea what I did with the early purchases. They were nondescript VF and XF and such. Raw. Probably sold or traded. In those days I could find type coins and 8 Escudos in pawn shops.
That is quite a jump from a rattler 64 to a PCGS CAC 66. It must have had bomb luster to it. 1871 is obviously one of the two "most common date", however they are difficult to locate in gem status. That said, any liberty seated dollar is difficult to locate in gem status!
If anyone is old enough to have known Billy Hall in SF who had the GEMS back then, he told me he would own it before he died. Didn't work out that way.
He and I traded at every show. We had a 1 to 5 grading standard we both used. It was great! Just a phone call and we knew what the coin would look like in hand.

Oh yeah.... it set me back $200.00 at a LCS back in 72....raw.
Wow! That’s a nice 66 @Pyrite. Great to have had someone with same eye as you so you can just use numbers to tell how nice the coin is. I did not know Mr. Hall unfortunately.

In Walnut Creek CA, right? I was driving on 680 through Walnut Creek a few months ago and saw a car with a license plate "GEM UNC". I guess slim chance that was you, but it made me think of your story.

@Luster cant believe you have two great 1859p dollars. Thanks for posting the pics.
I would post a picture but it isn't cac. Almost looks proof like!
Dipped as soon as I got home.
Was happy to pick up this wonderful piece.
Nice score! The 1848 $ is such an underrated date. In MS with CAC approval there is only 6 to choose from. Which is less then the 1854 and 1855 😮.
Are you building a set?
It’s not as nice as @UltraHighRelief 1848 $ but she is mine!
