Understanding CAC valuation and TPG

I think many people don’t realize that a green sticker puts a coin in the top 15-20% of coins for that grade, higher than the top 25% for plus coins, so many green sticker coins can make the C level at the next PCGS or NGC grade level. So I think people who buy gold stickers think since they will grade at A or B for the next grade level, they can possibly go C for even the next level after that. So a ms 63 gold can become a 65 C.

  • A,B,C, grading, though more theoretical than actual, would imply 30 BU grades for the Morgan Dollar with MS60-C being at the bottom and MS69-A, at the top.

Takes some expertise to split the category so finely as the so called distractions from perfection are not consistent at a given grade. No two MS 65-B coins are identical, even of the same date and mint mark. Pristine coins have an ego. Circulated coins have none.

  • And a non linear progression from grade to grade adds more complexity. There is no magic moment when the MS63 Morgan morphs into a 64. If the A,B,C, is not a fairly equal 33-33-33% split, the grader and consumer are overthinking the process.

  • Stevie, where did you get those percentages? They don’t sound right.
