Mark,
I agree it can happen, and maybe some can have vivid toning. But I believe the proliferation of these wildly toned ASE's were mostly intentionally enhanced or helped along.
I've had the below 2 ASE's in their holders for 27 and 23 years. …
I find it hard that ASE's would tone so vividly in <40 years without some intent involved. Plus they did not come in cellophane like Proof set coins which helped accelerate toning 'naturally'. I have 2 1997 ASEs & they have the slightest ri…
Guess I never got the memo. Probably cracked my first 15 years ago and my last, a WLH upgrade, yesterday. Never wished I never started, enjoy the coins in albums. Sometimes take coin out to hold to admire, but not too often. I do try to be as care…
Couldn't find the post. There is a PCGS Coin Grading video on Youtube, didn't watch it all but from a pie chart looked like surface preservation was > 50%, then luster, then strike, and finally eye appeal (toning would fit in here).
For MS grades it will be luster, strike & bagmarks taken into consideration of the grade. Someone posted the grading %'s recently and believe they change as the grade goes up, i.e. above MS65 if luster is poor it will not get the higher grade n…
I can understand how chatter or dings on a MS coin effect the grade: how many, how deep or long, where located, etc to understand the grade. But graffiti, burning a coin with over-dipping or harsh cleaning, do you subtract 2 points, 5, 10? I like …

I'm guessing, and not speaking for JA, but in XF and lower grades, strike and luster play a more limited role in the grade vs AU and MS. For problem free coins in these lower circulated states, wear and surface marks dictate a greater impact on gra…
Appreciate your honesty discussing this topic as a learning experience. I don't think many folks would share for fear of linking themselves to the issue. Liver of sulfur, learned something new today. Appears used on jewelry to darken the subject …
Very nice coin, good with grade, but I'd say no. I think LIBERTY should be sharper on obverse and some of the hits on the face, although minor, shouldn't be on an A or B coin. Would also think the feathers would have more detail.
Many collectors appreciate a perfect specimen lightly circulated original AU58+ more than a beat up uncirculated MS61 or 62. Not my series so I cannot comment on whether it is deserving of that distinction, but that I understand why price guides a…
My enjoyment more than compensates for any future value loss of selling raw vs slabs. Had for about 15 years and hope to hold for another 15+. I keep all the stickers for future reference when selling. That helped when I sold about 15 of them in …
Pyrite,
Agree. Just sold some of my lower grade raw Morgans with price rise and replacing with better coins that I had in slabs for years - see below. Never been afraid to break out of slab. Slabs are great for selling but would rather have in a…
The other thing to add is the period 02 - 08 was the 'non-doc' mortgage liar loans mainly originated by WAMU in the hundred of billions and sold & packaged by Merrill, BofA and Wachovia. WAMU would loan you big money even if you had no job. Al…
From the photo, don't like the toning that much but it might be NT and the photo juiced to the max. The colors all appear to be in the NT spectrum. Look at my avatar. It is 100% NT and came from an original roll 40+ years ago. Now it toned nicer…
Thanks for the tips. I agree with the large box and box within a box. I had a 78CC GSA Morgan stolen and it was in the Priority envelope. So easy for someone in the process chain to stick it under their shirt or rip open.
Agree there are grey areas and subjective variables to grading, however there are also clear black & white. I may be wrong, but no one that posted here thinks those 4 cleaned coins don't belong in a details holder. They belong in some collecti…
So does the Yellow dot mean JA agrees it is a M/A AU 55, even if close to a technical 58? From the photo, it looks ok, but guess under lights and a loupe there must be some telltale sign of cleaning.
Why do you think I prefer dull ugly coins? I think I stated the opposite in that I dislike over-dipped cleaned coins and prefer a dirty circulated coin or one that has a nice grey or brown patina.
But the TPG standards are not consistently applied…
I don't know about CAC approving thousands of blatantly conserved coins, emphasis on 'blatant'. IMHO there is acceptable conservation to remove gunk/PVC (acetone) and even unattractive toning on AU+ coins that doesn't effect their luster by removin…
Grade them what they are. Net grading a details coin with a clean grade is a slippery slope and a dishonest practice IMHO. I understand some series would have little to no coins with a clean grade. So let the pricing guides price accordingly and …
Unfortunately they are disappearing from marketplace, were so abundant 15+ years ago and usually at a nice discount over similarly graded PCGS & NGC slabbed coins. Probably bot more white ANACs slabs than PCGS & NGC combined on EBAY for th…
